Whilst Salsa isn't about rules, there are some expectations around courtesy and etiquette that are worthwhile being aware of:

:-)  Salsa and other Latin dances require close contact, but please respect your dance partner's personal space

:-)  As you'll be in close contact with your dance partner, cleanliness and person hygiene are important; please be sure to keep hands clean and be aware of personal odours; consider breath fresheners, deodorant and a spare/clean clothing

:-)  To request a dance, tradition suggests you extend your hand towards your dance partner; a request such as "would you like to dance", is also appreciated

:-)  Generally it is not considered appropriate to decline a dance; however, there will be occasions when you might prefer not to accept dance; e.g. you need a rest, you feel unwell, you are not comfortable dancing with the partner requesting the dance or you'd prefer not to dance to the song that's on or to the dance style, then politely decline the offer and consider requesting a dance from that person a little later

:-)  If you have a heavy cold or virus, consider whether or not you should miss a lesson or event; it's always better to avoid passing an illness onto dance partners

:-)  Many dancers 'kiss both cheeks' of their dance partner, as a greeting; please be respectful of other people who may not feel comfortable with this tradition

:-)  At times, the close contact of the dances may result in accidental contact of personal areas; dance is not an excuse to 'grope' a partner, and if you become uncomfortable with the actions of a dance partner, you should inform your Promoter

:-)  If you bring children to a lesson or event, please ensure they do not run about on the dance floor, as this is dangerous for them and for people dancing

:-)   The most important part of Salsa and Latin dance, is to HAVE FUN!!
